Founded in 1987 at the Carlyle Hotel in New York City by William E. Conway Jr., Stephen L. Norris, David Rubenstein, Daniel A. D'Aniello, and Greg Rosenbaum, the firm began as a boutique investment bank. In its early years, Carlyle developed a significant reputation for investments in the defense industry, though it has since diversified its portfolio extensively. The firm completed an initial public offering in May 2012 and now operates as a public company traded on the NASDAQ.

Carlyle operates through three primary business segments: Global Private Equity, Global Credit, and Global Investment Solutions.
