Founded in 1980 as Golder Thoma & Co., GTCR is one of the oldest and most established private equity firms in the United States. The firm was built on the legacy of Stanley Golder, a pioneer in the industry who helped relax ERISA restrictions to allow pension funds to invest in private equity. In 1998, the firm split from partners Carl Thoma and Bryan Cressey, officially becoming GTCR Golder Rauner.

The firm is best known for its Leaders Strategy, which involves identifying and partnering with exceptional management executives to acquire and build companies through combinations of organic growth and strategic acquisitions. GTCR has a long history of executing industry consolidations, or roll-ups, across various sectors including funeral homes, wireless paging, and more recently, complex financial technology and healthcare services.

Headquartered in Chicago, GTCR manages approximately $50 billion in equity capital. Since its inception, the firm has invested more than $30 billion in over 290 companies. In recent years, the firm has raised significant capital, including its $11.5 billion Fund XIV in 2023, and has executed high-profile deals such as the acquisition of Worldpay from FIS and the multi-billion dollar sale of AssuredPartners.
