Bain Capital

Bain Capital was founded in 1984 by partners from the consulting firm Bain & Company, including Mitt Romney, T. Coleman Andrews III, and Eric Kriss. The firm was established to apply consulting-based operational improvement techniques to investment opportunities. Initially focused on venture capital, the firm successfully launched Staples and other early-stage ventures before shifting its primary focus toward leveraged buyouts and growth capital investments in more mature companies during the late 1980s and 1990s.

The firm expanded significantly throughout the 1990s and 2000s, launching various affiliates to manage different asset classes such as Brookside Capital for public equity and Sankaty Advisors for fixed income. Bain Capital became a global powerhouse in the private equity industry, frequently partnering with other major firms for large-scale acquisitions. The firm faced significant public and media scrutiny during the 2000s and 2010s due to Mitt Romney's political career, which brought attention to the firm's historical investment practices and performance.

Today, Bain Capital is one of the world's largest alternative investment firms, managing approximately $185 billion in assets. It maintains a global footprint with over 20 offices across four continents. The firm continues to operate across multiple strategies, including life sciences, impact investing, and real estate, while remaining a dominant force in large-cap private equity and credit markets.
