TA Associates

TA Associates was founded in 1968 by Peter Brooke with backing from Tucker, Anthony & RL Day. Originally focused on early-stage venture capital, the firm managed approximately $5 million in its first year and grew to $125 million by 1980. Throughout the 1970s and 80s, the firm shifted its focus toward larger investments in more mature, profitable companies, eventually transitioning its self-description from venture capital to private equity by the early 1990s.

The firm underwent significant global expansion in the 2000s, opening offices in London, Mumbai, and Hong Kong to establish a presence in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. Under the leadership of long-time executive C. Kevin Landry, TA transformed from a regional player into a major global growth private equity firm. In recent years, TA has consistently ranked among the world's largest private equity firms, reaching the 19th spot in the PEI 300 ranking in 2024.

TA Associates operates by leading buyouts and minority recapitalizations across five core industry groups. While the firm has seen significant success with public offerings like Auction Technology Group, it has also faced challenges, such as a racketeering lawsuit (which was unsuccessful) related to a syndicated loan for Millennium Health. Today, the firm maintains a large team of over 100 investment professionals across global offices in Boston, Menlo Park, Austin, London, Mumbai, and Hong Kong.
