Apax Partners was established in 1972 when Ronald Cohen and Maurice Tchénio founded Multinational Management Group (MMG) in London, Paris, and Chicago. The firm expanded significantly in 1977 through a partnership with New York-based venture capitalist Alan Patricof, eventually unifying under the Apax Partners brand globally by 2001. Over the decades, it has evolved from its venture capital roots into one of the world's most prominent private equity houses, raising over $77 billion in capital.

The firm focuses on large-scale buyouts and growth capital investments, primarily targeting mid-to-large market companies. Its historical activity includes landmark deals such as the $3.5 billion leveraged buyout of Yell Group and the acquisition of iconic brands like Tommy Hilfiger. While its European and French operations became independent in 2006, the London-headquartered Apax Partners LLP continues to operate globally with a strong presence in the US, Europe, and Asia.
