CapitalG, formerly known as Google Capital, was founded in 2013 as the growth equity investment arm of Alphabet Inc. Unlike Google's corporate development team, CapitalG operates independently and invests for financial profit rather than purely strategic alignment with Google's products. The firm underwent a name change to CapitalG in November 2016 following the Alphabet restructuring.

The firm focuses on growth-stage technology companies that have progressed beyond the startup phase.
