Morgan Stanley Capital Partners

Morgan Stanley Capital Partners (MSCP) was established in 1985 as the private equity arm of the investment bank Morgan Stanley. Between 1985 and 2004, the group invested over $7 billion through four primary funds, targeting leveraged buyout opportunities. Notable early funds included the $2.2 billion Fund II raised in 1987 and the $3.3 billion Fund IV raised in 1999.

In 2004, the MSCP team spun out from Morgan Stanley to become an independent firm renamed Metalmark Capital. This move was part of a broader industry trend where major investment banks spun off their captive private equity groups. Following its independence, the firm continued its focus on middle-market investments across various industries.

In December 2007, Metalmark Capital was acquired by Citigroup Alternative Investments as part of a strategic expansion into merchant banking under CEO Vikram Pandit. Despite the acquisition by Citigroup, the firm maintains its legacy as the successor to Morgan Stanley's original private equity operations, having raised approximately $8.5 billion since its inception.
