AEA Investors was founded in 1968 as American European Associates to manage investments for high-profile clients including S.G. Warburg & Co. and the Rockefeller, Mellon, and Harriman families. Since 1983, the firm has raised more than $15 billion in capital across its private equity and debt funds from high-net-worth individuals and institutional investors.
The firm is headquartered in New York City with additional offices in Stamford, London, Munich, and Shanghai. It operates across three primary platforms: Middle Market Private Equity, Small Business Private Equity, and Private Debt (including Mezzanine and Middle Market Debt).
AEA focuses on identifying value in middle-market companies across a variety of industrial and consumer-facing sectors. Notable historical activities include the acquisition and subsequent sale of Burt's Bees to Clorox in 2007 and the management of several multi-billion dollar investment programs such as AEA Fund VII.
