Founded in 1995 by Tom Gores, Platinum Equity began with the acquisition of LSI for $200,000 and rapidly expanded through a high volume of acquisitions in the IT and networking sectors. The firm established its first dedicated private equity fund in 2004 and has since raised multiple large-scale buyout funds, including a $6.5 billion vehicle in 2017. Platinum Equity is known for its operationally focused investment strategy, often acquiring distressed or underperforming businesses and returning them to profitability.

The firm operates globally with offices in Beverly Hills, Boston, New York, London, and Singapore. Its portfolio spans a wide range of industries including information technology, logistics, industrials, and telecommunications. Notable historical activity includes significant transactions such as the acquisition of Ingram Micro for $7.2 billion and the multi-billion dollar carve-out of Emerson Electric's Network Power business, which was rebranded as Vertiv. The firm also maintains a high profile through its association with the Detroit Pistons, which Gores acquired in 2011.
