Metalmark Capital traces its roots back to 1985, originally operating as Morgan Stanley Capital Partners (MSCP). During its tenure at Morgan Stanley, the group invested over $7 billion through four funds before spinning out to become an independent firm in 2004. This transition occurred during a period when several major investment banks were spinning off their private equity units.
In December 2007, Metalmark was acquired by Citigroup Alternative Investments as part of a strategic expansion into merchant banking and hedge funds under CEO Vikram Pandit. The firm focuses on leveraged buyout and growth capital investments, particularly within middle-market companies. Since its inception, the firm and its predecessor have raised approximately $8.5 billion in total commitments across multiple fund cycles.
