Metalmark Capital
MediumFirm Overview
Metalmark Capital is an American private equity firm that specializes in leveraged buyouts and growth capital investments in middle-market companies.
Metalmark Capital traces its origins to 1985 when it was established as Morgan Stanley Capital Partners (MSCP), the private equity arm of Morgan Stanley. During its tenure at Morgan Stanley, the group invested over $7 billion through four flagship funds. In 2004, following a trend of major investment banks spinning off their private equity units, the team established itself as an independent firm named Metalmark Capital.
The firm focuses on middle-market companies across various industries, utilizing strategies such as leveraged buyouts and growth capital. In December 2007, Metalmark was acquired by Citigroup Alternative Investments as part of a strategic expansion into merchant banking under CEO Vikram Pandit. Following this acquisition, Citigroup integrated Metalmark while disposing of other private equity interests to position the firm as its primary middle-market investment vehicle.
Since its inception, the team has raised approximately $8.5 billion in total commitments. This includes capital raised across its historical funds at Morgan Stanley as well as subsequent funds raised following its spinout and eventual acquisition by Citigroup.
