Founded in 1976 by Jerome Kohlberg Jr. and cousins Henry Kravis and George R. Roberts, KKR is a pioneer of the leveraged buyout industry. The firm gained international fame for its 1988 takeover of RJR Nabisco, which remained the largest LBO in history for 17 years. The firm's early history was defined by 'bootstrap' investments in family-owned businesses facing succession issues.

Today, KKR operates as a diversified investment manager across three primary business areas: asset management, insurance, and strategic holdings. Its asset management division includes public and private credit, private equity, infrastructure, real estate, and capital markets. The firm has expanded significantly through its acquisition of Global Atlantic, completed in 2024.
