General Atlantic was founded in 1980 as the captive investment team for Atlantic Philanthropies, a philanthropic organization established by Charles F. Feeney, the co-founder of Duty Free Shoppers Ltd. The firm initially focused on investments in computer software, oil and gas exploration, real estate, and retailing. Over time, it expanded its funding sources to include family offices, foundations, and endowments, and began a global expansion opening offices across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

The firm is recognized as a pioneer in the growth equity sector, providing long-term capital to companies during their growth phase. In 2024, General Atlantic significantly expanded its platform by acquiring Actis, a British investment firm specialized in sustainable infrastructure, which became the firm's sustainable infrastructure arm. As of late 2024, the merger expanded the platform to approximately $97 billion in operating assets, while overall assets under management reached over $125 billion by 2026.

General Atlantic operates globally with over 900 professionals and approximately 29 offices. The firm consistently ranks among the largest private equity firms in the world according to the PEI 300.
