General Atlantic was founded in 1980 as the captive investment team for Atlantic Philanthropies, a philanthropic organization established by Charles F. Feeney. Initially led by former McKinsey executives, the firm focused on sectors like computer software, oil and gas, and real estate. By the late 1980s, it expanded its investor base to include other family offices, foundations, and endowments, eventually evolving into one of the world's largest private equity firms.

Notable activity includes the 2024 acquisition of Actis, which became the firm's sustainable infrastructure arm, and substantial investments in global platforms like Jio Platforms in India.
