New Mountain Capital

New Mountain Capital was founded in 1999 by Steven Klinsky, a veteran of Forstmann Little & Company and Goldman Sachs. Headquartered in New York City with additional offices in Europe and Asia, the firm was established to pursue a different strategy than traditional private equity by focusing on business building and organic growth rather than high debt leverage. The firm primarily targets mid-sized companies, often family-owned, that operate in predictable and acyclical industries.

The firm operates across several investment products including private equity, credit, and net lease. New Mountain is known for a proactive research-driven approach where the investment team evaluates various sectors at the beginning of each year to identify long-term growth potential. This strategy has led the firm to rank among the world's largest private equity managers, consistently appearing in the PEI 300.

Significant milestones in the firm's history include Blackstone Inc. acquiring a 9% stake in 2018 and the raising of over $10 billion in new capital in 2021. In 2025, the firm expanded its service offerings by launching New Mountain Wealth Solutions to support Registered Investment Advisors (RIAs) and their customers. As of 2024, the firm has reportedly returned more capital to its investors than it has invested across its history.
