J.H. Whitney & Company

Founded in 1946 by John Hay Whitney and Benno Schmidt, J.H. Whitney & Company is recognized as one of the first professional venture capital firms. Originally established to provide 'private adventure capital' to entrepreneurs who were unable to secure bank financing, the firm is credited with helping to formalize the venture capital industry. One of its most significant early successes was the development of Florida Foods Corporation, which became Minute Maid.

During the 1980s, following broader industry trends, the firm transitioned its primary focus from early-stage venture capital toward leveraged buyouts, turnarounds, and recapitalizations of mature middle-market companies. Notable transactions during this era included the acquisitions of Prime Computer and Filene's Basement. The firm continues to operate as Whitney & Co. or J.H. Whitney Capital Partners, LLC, managing institutional private equity funds across various market cycles.
