J.H. Whitney & Company
MediumFirm Overview
J.H. Whitney & Company is one of the world's first venture capital firms, now focused on middle-market leveraged buyouts and growth capital.
Founded in 1946 by John Hay Whitney and Benno Schmidt, J.H. Whitney & Company is widely considered one of the first professional venture capital firms. Originally established to provide 'private adventure capital' to entrepreneurs who were underserved by traditional banks, the firm is credited with helping formalize the venture capital industry. One of its most famous early successes was the development of Florida Foods Corporation, which became Minute Maid.
In the 1980s, following broader industry trends, the firm transitioned its primary focus from early-stage venture capital toward leveraged buyouts and growth equity. During this era, the firm participated in high-profile deals such as the acquisition of Filene's Basement and a white-knight leveraged buyout of Prime Computer in 1989, the latter of which eventually resulted in a significant loss.
Today, the firm operates as J.H. Whitney Capital Partners, LLC, focusing on middle-market companies. It specializes in buyouts, turnarounds, acquisitions, and recapitalizations. While the firm managed several billion dollars in the early 2000s, its more recent institutional funds have been smaller in scale following the impact of the dot-com bubble on its earlier technology-heavy portfolios.
