Fremont Group

Fremont Group was established in 1986 as the formal investment arm of the Bechtel family to manage long-term capital and separate investment activities from the Bechtel Corporation, a global engineering and construction firm. Originally operating as Bechtel Investments, the firm rebranded to Fremont Investors, Inc. in 1993 and subsequently to Fremont Group.

During the late 1980s and 1990s, the firm transitioned from passive holdings to active direct private equity transactions and control investments. A significant early deal included the 1993 acquisition of the Coldwell Banker real estate brokerage from Sears, Roebuck and Company.

Over the following decades, Fremont Group diversified into several specialized business units, including hedge funds, real estate, and venture capital. The firm is known for emphasizing long-term investment horizons and partnership-based strategies over short-term financial engineering. It also served as the first institutional investor for Calera Capital (formerly Fremont Partners) before it spun out as an independent entity.
