Fremont Group was established in 1986 as the formal investment arm of the Bechtel family, whose wealth originated from the Bechtel Corporation, a global engineering and construction firm. Originally known as Bechtel Investments, the firm was rebranded as Fremont Investors in 1993 to separate family investment activities from the core operating businesses. Over time, the organization evolved from managing passive holdings to executing direct private equity transactions and maintaining control over its investments.

During the late 1990s and 2000s, the firm expanded its capabilities by establishing dedicated teams for various asset classes, including hedge funds, real estate, venture capital, and private equity. The firm is recognized for its long-term investment horizon and partnership-based approach. A significant development in its history was the 2007 spin-out of Fremont Partners, which rebranded as Calera Capital after establishing itself as an independent private equity firm.

Currently, the group operates through three primary business units: FPR Partners (a hedge fund), Fremont Realty Capital (real estate), and Fremont Ventures (venture capital). The firm maintains a low-profile as a private investment office, focusing on managing the proprietary capital of the Bechtel family across a diverse range of sectors and investment strategies.
