Fremont Group

Fremont Group was established in 1986 as the formal investment arm of the Bechtel family, owners of the global engineering and construction firm Bechtel Corporation. Originally operating as Bechtel Investments, the firm was created to manage long-term capital and separate the family's investment activities from their core operating businesses. In 1993, the organization officially rebranded as Fremont Investors, Inc., and later became known as Fremont Group.

The firm expanded its mandate in the late 1980s and early 1990s from passive holdings to include direct private equity transactions and control investments. Throughout its history, Fremont Group has developed specialized teams focusing on diverse asset classes including hedge funds, real estate, venture capital, and private equity. The firm is known for emphasizing long-term investment horizons and partnership-based strategies over short-term financial engineering.

Fremont Group operates through several distinct business areas, including FPR Partners for hedge funds, Fremont Realty Capital for real estate, and Fremont Ventures for venture capital. Notably, the private equity firm Calera Capital originated as Fremont Partners before rebranding and spinning out as an independent entity in 2007. The firm remains a prominent example of a large-scale American private investment office serving a multi-generational industrial family.
