Goldman Sachs Alternatives

Goldman Sachs Alternatives was established in 1986 to allow the firm and its clients to participate in private equity transactions. While the firm was initially a slow entrant into leveraged buyouts and junk bonds during the early 1980s, it began making long-term equity investments in 1983. Since 1992, the group has raised significant third-party capital from institutional investors, including pension funds, insurance companies, and sovereign wealth funds.

The business operates as a subsidiary of Goldman Sachs and manages a diverse range of alternative assets. Its activity is characterized by raising massive institutional funds, such as the GS Capital Partners and West Street Capital Partners series, the latter of which saw its eighth fund close at $9.7 billion in 2022. The firm continues to expand its reach across private credit, secondaries, and growth equity.
