Founded in 1987 at the Carlyle Hotel in New York City by five partners with backgrounds in government and finance, The Carlyle Group began as a boutique investment bank. The firm raised its first dedicated buyout fund in 1990 and early on developed a significant reputation for its investments within the defense industry, including notable acquisitions like United Defense Industries. Over the decades, it evolved into one of the largest private equity firms globally, completiong a $700 million initial public offering in 2012.

The firm operates across three primary segments: Global Private Equity, Global Real Assets, and Global Credit. While historically associated with defense, Carlyle has diversified significantly into sectors such as technology, telecommunications, energy, and consumer retail. It has been led by prominent figures including former IBM CEO Lou Gerstner and current CEO Harvey Schwartz, who took the helm to lead the firm's global operations and diverse investment portfolio.
