The Carlyle Group is an American multinational private equity, alternative asset management, and financial services firm headquartered in Washington, D.C.
Founded in 1987 as a boutique investment bank by partners including David Rubenstein and William Conway Jr., The Carlyle Group has grown into one of the largest investment firms in the world. The firm established its reputation early on through defense industry acquisitions such as United Defense Industries and later expanded into massive leveraged buyouts across various sectors during the 2000s.
The firm operates across three primary segments: global private equity, real assets, and private credit. After decades as a private partnership, Carlyle went public on the NASDAQ in 2012. It has recently diversified its portfolio further into technology, consumer brands, and sustainability services while undergoing significant leadership transitions, including the appointment of Harvey Schwartz as CEO in 2023.
