HPS Investment Partners
MediumFirm Overview
HPS Investment Partners is a prominent American investment firm primarily focused on non-investment grade credit, including private and public credit markets.
Founded in 2007 by former Goldman Sachs executives Scott Kapnick, Scot French, and Michael Patterson, HPS Investment Partners originally operated as the private equity and credit investment division of Highbridge Capital Management within J.P. Morgan Asset Management. Initially known as Highbridge Principal Strategies, the firm experienced significant growth following the 2008 financial crisis as it filled the void left by traditional banks in the credit markets.
In 2016, the firm's management team completed a buyout from J.P. Morgan, establishing HPS as an independent entity. Since then, it has grown into one of the largest private credit managers globally, specializing in complex, bespoke financing solutions. In late 2024, BlackRock announced an agreement to acquire HPS for approximately $12 billion, a transaction that was completed in July 2025, integrating HPS into a combined private credit unit.
