Crescent Capital Group
MediumFirm Overview
Crescent Capital Group is a global alternative investment firm focused on below investment grade credit markets, including leveraged loans, high-yield bonds, and mezzanine debt.
Founded in 1991 by former Drexel Burnham Lambert investment bankers Mark Attanasio, Robert D. Beyer, and Jean-Marc Chapus, Crescent Capital Group originally launched as a Dallas-based firm focused on high-yield bonds and distressed portfolios. In 1995, the firm was acquired by Trust Company of the West (TCW Group), where it operated as the leveraged finance and mezzanine capital group. During this period, it expanded through a 2005 merger with Canterbury Mezzanine Capital to strengthen its East Coast presence.
In 2010, the firm spun off from TCW to re-establish itself as an independent entity and was renamed Crescent Capital Group. The firm has since expanded its global footprint, establishing operations in London to serve the European market. In January 2021, Sun Life Financial acquired a 51% majority stake in the company, though the firm maintains its specialized focus on alternative credit strategies.
Crescent Capital Group specializes in below investment grade credit markets, managing billions across various funds. Its primary investment activities include mezzanine capital, middle-market lending, and managing distressed securities. Since its inception, the firm has invested in over 190 companies and continues to maintain a strategic relationship with its former parent, TCW.
