The Cypress Group
MediumFirm Overview
An American private equity firm focused on leveraged buyout investments across various industry sectors.
Founded in 1994 by former senior members of Lehman Brothers' merchant banking group, The Cypress Group emerged as a significant player in the private equity landscape. The firm successfully raised two institutional funds, totaling approximately $3.6 billion, with its second fund ranking among the largest for leveraged buyout transactions at the time of its 1999 closing.
The firm's historical strategy was built around six distinct industry groups, covering sectors ranging from automotive and aerospace to healthcare and media. Through its history, Cypress invested more than $4 billion in equity across more than 30 companies, participating in transactions with a total value exceeding $22 billion.
Despite its early success, the firm began a period of decline in the late 2000s following a series of weak investments in its second fund. In 2007, Cypress announced it would not raise a successor fund, leading to a significant loss of senior investment professionals and an eventual orderly wind-down of its portfolio investments as its final fund reached the end of its term in 2009.
