Founded in 1993 by Raymond J. Harbert, Harbert Management Corporation (HMC) is an independent investment firm headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama. The company was established as a successor to the Harbert Corporation, an international construction and energy conglomerate. Today, the firm operates investment funds across seven alternative asset classes, organized primarily into two areas of concentration: real assets and private capital.
HMC maintains a global footprint with domestic offices in cities such as Atlanta, Dallas, New York, and San Francisco, as well as international locations in London, Paris, Madrid, and Luxembourg. The firm historically served as the majority owner and original financier of Harbinger Capital and the Harbinger funds. Additionally, the company owns Harbert Realty Services (HRS).
Beyond its investment activities, HMC is active in philanthropy through the HERO Foundation. Established in 1998, the foundation provides direct financial assistance to individuals affected by natural disasters, medical conditions, or temporary financial hardships to help them regain independence.
