Colony Capital
MediumFirm Overview
DigitalBridge Group, Inc. (formerly Colony Capital) is a global digital infrastructure investment firm that owns and operates cell towers, data centers, fiber, and edge infrastructure.
Founded in 1991 by Tom Barrack, the firm originally operated as Colony Capital, a private equity real estate firm with diverse interests ranging from hospitality and professional sports to celebrity estates. Its early portfolio included high-profile assets such as Raffles Hotels, Fairmont Hotels, Paris Saint-Germain F.C., and Miramax. Following a series of mergers and a strategic shift toward digital assets, the firm rebranded to DigitalBridge in 2021, pivoting its focus almost exclusively to digital infrastructure.
In recent years, the firm has aggressively expanded its footprint in the technology sector through multi-billion dollar acquisitions, including Switch, Inc. and AMP Capital's global infrastructure business. In December 2025, the firm entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by SoftBank Group for approximately $4 billion. The transaction is intended to integrate DigitalBridge's massive digital infrastructure portfolio into SoftBank's Artificial Super Intelligence strategy, with the firm expected to operate as a standalone subsidiary upon closing.
