Baring Private Equity Asia
MediumFirm Overview
Baring Private Equity Asia (BPEA) was a leading Asian private equity firm headquartered in Hong Kong, focusing on buyouts, real estate, and credit investments across the Asia-Pacific region.
Baring Private Equity Asia (BPEA) was founded in 1997 as a subsidiary of Baring Private Equity Partners, an affiliate of Barings Bank. Following the collapse of Barings Bank and the challenges of the Asian financial crisis, Jean Salata led a management buyout in 2000, establishing BPEA as an independent firm while retaining the Barings brand. The firm successfully raised multiple flagship funds, growing from a $305 million debut fund in 1999 to an $11.2 billion eighth fund in 2022.
The firm operated three primary investment strategies: Private Equity, Real Estate, and a dedicated Credit unit focusing on the Indian market. Throughout its history, BPEA became one of the most prominent investment platforms in the Asia-Pacific region, executing significant transactions in sectors ranging from technology and education to consumer goods and business services.
In March 2022, Swedish investment firm EQT AB announced the acquisition of BPEA for $7.5 billion. The transaction was completed in October 2022, and the firm was initially renamed BPEA EQT before being rebranded as EQT Private Capital Asia in January 2024. The acquisition served to create a combined Pan-Asian platform for EQTs investment activities.
