EIG Global Energy Partners was originally established in 1982 as the Energy & Infrastructure Group of the TCW Group in Los Angeles. The firm focused on providing mezzanine debt and private equity to energy projects and companies primarily in OECD countries. In January 2011, the group spun off from TCW to become an independent firm, subsequently moving its headquarters to Washington, D.C. to seek greater regulatory flexibility and business ownership for the energy team.

The firm has since grown into a major global player in energy and infrastructure investment, attracting minority stake investments from the China Investment Corporation and Affiliated Managers Group. EIG is recognized as one of the largest infrastructure debt investment firms globally. Its investment reach extends across the energy value chain, including notable activities in oil and gas pipelines and liquefied natural gas.

EIG is known for managing complex, large-scale transactions and has a history of high-profile deals and legal navigation. This includes a significant $12.4 billion acquisition of a stake in Saudi Aramco's pipeline business and a successful legal resolution regarding its spin-off from TCW during Carlyle's acquisition of the latter. The firm maintains a global presence with offices in major financial and energy hubs including London, Hong Kong, Houston, and Seoul.
