How a decade of pharma digitalization drove Nordic’s $8.9 bn sale of Clario to Thermo Scientific

Nordic Capital sold Clario to Thermo Scientific. Daniel Berglund, partner and head of healthcare at Nordic Capital, noted that the pharma services market was expected to have over 10 percent long-term growth driven by digitalization, including in clinical development.

Nordic Capital, a private equity firm, identified the pharmaceutical services sector as holding potential for significant growth, driven by digitalization. This perspective was shared by Daniel Berglund, partner and head of healthcare at Nordic Capital, who stated, "We saw that this market was going to be poised for 10 percent, plus decades worth of long-term growth," largely due to the digitalization of pharma services, including clinical development. Nordic Capital's strategy involved acquiring a market leader such as ERT and subsequently merging it with Bioclinica to establish Clario. Along with Astorg, Cinven, and Novo Holdings, Nordic Capital completed the $8.875 billion all-cash sale of clinical trial data firm Clario Holdings to Thermo Fisher Scientific in March. This strategic move highlights the firm's engagement in the pharmaceutical services market, particularly in areas influenced by digital transformation.
